After owning this lock for 6 months and loving it, here are my reasons why I switched.Living in the big city and riding bikes, owning the best lock available is the most important step to keeping the bike in your possession. Kryptonite does this well. Very well. They offer all sorts of strengths depending on your threat level of getting stolen. Considering that I would have to leave my bike locked up downtown for hours on end, I'd figure mine was pretty high. So naturally I bought the strongest they had, New York Fahgettaboutit and boy was that beafy. First impressions, hand down it's the strongest and toughest lock. Extremely sturdy but it wasn't the right lock for me. Why ?First. It's shankel is shorter then this one and while that's done intentionally to prevent jacks from being used to pry open your lock, it realistically means that you are really limited to what/where you can lock it up. And once you locked it up you could only lock up the frame (I have wheel locks on my bike, but secondary protection is always welcomed). This version, while slightly lighter, offered more space to lock my bike to more choices, but I could also get a wheel locked up to ( and thus preventing a jack from getting into the lock). This became a win/winSecond. Storage. While not in use, i found it a pain to store the 'Fahgettaboutit'. When I carried a back pack with me, the extra weight was really noticeable and uncomfortable. I couldn't really keep it in the front of the bike. I tried keeping it on my rack in the back but i found it a little dangerous because the little shifts in movements become dangerous at high speeds, especially while turning. With this version, when I found out it has the bike clamp I became really excited. Not only does it store it safely, but I have it in the center part of my frame, which means my CG (center of gravity) is excellent. It doesn't move or shift at all. Every month or so it becomes a little sticky or doesn't slide in 'n out as easily and I just add, literally, a drop of oil and it's back to as good as new. The trade off is some folks like to keep their water bottle there. So if you don't mind the trade off or have another place for it ( not enough space for both inside the frame) consider this lock.Lastly. Security. I started by saying that security was my number one most important option, and then I give all these reasons why I love this lock and none of them are security related. Well lets address that. Remember, all locks are merely deterrents and all can be cut through. All of them. You're never going to be 100% theft proof. Impossible. Yes the Fahgettaboutit is the Fort Knocks of locks. And if that's the case, then this is the....hmm, what's the 2nd most secure building ? No one ever talks about that! I digress, basically this lock isn't no push over. You're not getting through with bolt cutters or other little toy options. You need a cordless saw ( don't laugh, they use them!) So basically it comes down to this. This lock will take about a minute to saw through. The Fahgettabouit will buy you an extra maybe 10 to 20 secs of drill time. Will the cops show up or a citizen intervene in the extra time ? Chances are if it didn't happen in the first minute, its slim to happen in the next 20 secs. Is that extra drill time worth the trade offs of everything listed above. If it's for you, then the Fahgettaboutit is the perfect lock. For me, the trade-offs as mentioned above are more valuable in a day to day situation and I feel just as safe.Hope this review helps.

I bought one of these locks, and it worked great -- until the key broke in the lock (rendering the lock useless and my bike attached to the stand).Open inspecting the situation (and after five+ hours of self-blame), I realized that the keys are made of a very fragile metal. The key just wasn't strong enough and no matter how "careful" the instructions tell you to be, the darn thing is bound to break.While I'll buy Kryptonite again, I'll not buy this lock. I need both the lock and key to well-made.

I bought this lock to use when I'm out riding and want to leave my bike outside the shop for a bit. I have a Kryptonite New York Noose 1213 Chain Bicycle Lock with Evolution Series 4 Disc Lock Chain Bicycle Lock (4-Foot x 3-Inch) which I use for work. As in the bike is locked all day long away from where I can keep an eye on it and I wanted the best lock I could buy. But that lock is heavy! 8lbs! This one is heavy but not that much. In addition to this lock I also got a Kryptonite Kryptoflex 1004 Looped Bicycle Security Cable (10mm x 4-Foot) to lock the front wheel to the bike. So with a loop around the wheel and the pole, and this lock around the pole my bike is pretty theft proof. Nothing is perfect, thieves could still strip the parts but it's a better lock than most other bike riders are using, so it deters people enough.On this lock vs the noose, the chain is more flexible in that you can lock the front wheel and the bike to the pole with the same level of high security. The U part of the lock is smaller so it's harder to pry it open. You can get a New York version of the small lock and if you live in the worst area for bike theft, I'd do that. But at 8lbs that chain without a set of panniers to hold it is bulky and a pain to transport.On this lock, which size to get. I like this medium size, it's big enough to go around the frame, the rear tire and a parking meter. The small one is just frame/tire size and the large one will also hold your front wheel, (if you take it off) but it's getting up there in weight. Like goldie locks, medium is just right. If you are unsure, measure twice, order once.On the mounting bracket. It sucks, which is why I gave this 4 vs 5 stars. I wouldn't bother with the bracket, instead bungie it to your rack, or put it in your backpack/messenger bag.On the key, yes they are thin, just be careful and don't force it and you'll be fine.
