Great knife from KA-BAR
By Ghidora
The D2 Extreme is a great addition to my collection. The sturdy D2 steel blade beats 440C in hardness, toughness and edge holding ability. The Kraton G handle is comfortable and provides good grip.I think that calling it a "fighting" knife, pigeon holes its uses. This knife would make a great camping and/or hiking companion. The 1282 comes with the Kydex hard nylon sheath, which is great if you're going to be using this knife in wet conditions.I would definitely recommend this knife to anyone needing a tough long-knife that can be used for more than just cutting.

Great all-around tool
By Mason Cantar
This is a great all-around knife, and I mean all around... cutting, chopping, prying, hammering, digging, puncturing, fighting, everything. I'd recommend it to anybody, but if you're a civilian then you'd probably be better off with the Ka-Bar D2 Impact because it's smaller and lighter (and prettier). But if you're military, paramilitary, etc. there's not much better out there, especially not for the price. The D2 tool steel is harder than most knives, and therefore keeps a better edge. You'd think that with the harder blade you'd have a more brittle steel, but not with D2... think hammers, you don't break those easily, but they hold their surface pretty damn well. There's a video review out there where a 225lb man stands on the handle with the blade stuck into a vice, and it doesn't even bend it (at least not for the first minute or so, but you won't get near that amount of pressure on the blade). Another thing worth mentioning is the coating on the blade. It looks bead-blasted or powder coated in the picture, but its more like some kind of black paint. It does a good job of reducing reflectivity and also acts as a blade lubricant. The edge stays sharp for a pretty long time, certainly longer than the USMC version does. It isn't as easy to sharpen, but its a small price to pay. Besides, I sharpen my knives to pass time, so I don't mind (if you've ever been deployed, you'd understand). Its also a great fighting knife... it's long enough to reach the aorta from the clavicular notch, and its strong enough that you can use it as a pry bar on the vertebra and it won't chip on bone. Also, the serrations are convex, so they won't get stuck in bone as easily (although I wouldn't take the risk in combat, especially not in the rib cage). Too wide for the ear canal though. If you want a great fighting knife, both the short and full length, straight edge, tanto shaped Ka-Bars are great.Really, my only issue with this knife is the weight balance. Its a bit too heavy in the handle, in my opinion, but then again I'm real picky when it comes to my knives.GOOD:-Very strong blade-Good edge retention-Non reflective coating-Comfortable handle-Convex serrations-Works for everythingBAD:-Slightly handle-heavy (and I mean slightly... you probably wouldn't notice)-Exposed tang on bottom-No top hilt

just awesome
By Michael Berman
When this arrived all you can think of is "Rambo" would have been proud. This is a great knife at a great price. The D2 steel is very hard and holds its edge much better than stainless. D2 steel is commercial steel use in tools like drill bits and so because of it's long lasting virtues it is usually much more expensive but not here...this knife was a bargain on amazon costing about the same as the carbon steel variety. Highly recommend!
