Good pack with some critical design flaws
By Peter R. Gibbons
The old Kelty Redwing set a standard for the industry and created an ultra versatile design that allowed for excellent outdoor traveling. This new design certainly takes after the old, but has come critical design flaws to be a serious outdoor-worthy pack. The first critical design flaw is the placement of the metal frame member directly on the spine and not under padding. When doing outdoor activities, even as simple as stretching before a hike results in contact between spine and this exposed metal beam. It's uncomfortable, but livable. Fast forward to a fall while skiing, hiking, or other, and it is clear that the frame member is actually a really bad design flaw in application and in concept. I realize the trend in packs is to create ventilation with rigid and complex back wall shapes, but as a first responder, I -really- don't like this design for the safety aspect. This zone needs to be padded, even heavily padded, for spine protection in a fall. The next critical design flaw is the size of the side pockets. The sides of this pack have both a mesh pocket and a zippered pocket, both of which interfere with each other, and neither of which achieve any real useful value. The old Kelty Redwing design had one large pocket on each side of the pack large enough to fit a standard-sized Stanley thermos (for size reference). The main pocket will barely (if at all) fit a Nalgene bottle, muchless anything larger. The mesh pockets below are positioned such that no water bottle will fit if the upper pocket has anything rigid in it. So, the design is severely compromised for some purpose that I have yet to figure out. Personally, I want these side-pockets to be water-bottle-compatible, because I want my water accessible and I want the size to be versatile -- not everybody buys $10 Nalgene bottles to carry water in. The old design was superior and not as confused. The main compartment zipper on this pack is constantly wanting to get caught up with the rain lip. I've rarely/never had a pack that had so many problems with the main compartment zipper interfering so badly with itself. All said and done, I have found this pack to be unworthy of serious outdoor use, but have found its features to be worthy of day-to-day use for the heavy carrier around town. Overall the pack is comfortable and it rides well. The compartmentalization makes it more well suited to student/mobile office use than it does for serious outdoor use. This pack is also one-of-a-kind these days for retaining ski slots behind the water bottle pockets, which is one of my main interests in the pack. This old design is simple, tried and true, and critical for the serious Winter outdoor, cross-country traveler. However, if Kelty were to bring this pack back into focus, they would fix the issues I outlined above and incorporate more of the old design elements and simplify for the serious outdoors-person.

Great day hiking bag!!
By M.H.
I purchased this pack for day hikes, but certainly could use it for an overnight camp. This is a good, quality pack and I own several packs. I recently used this pack for a couple of day hikes while geocaching with my daughter. We hiked for about 8 miles on one trip and about 4 miles on another....on trails, off trails, and across the Etowah River. It took a beating on these trips with no problems. What I like about this pack:- Not too big, but large enough for essentials- Lots of pockets and separate areas for "things"- Lots of loops and hooks for carabiners, etc.- Easy to adjust for comfort- Map flap...love a place for my maps- Durability (good material and zippers)If you like to organize and separate all of your gear, this bag is a good choice. I don't like bags with one big compartment.

Redwing 44
By Biker Eagle
I've had a Kelty Tioga for almost 30 years and it's still going strong. The Redwing is my 1st Kelty I/F pack and it appears to be the same level of quality. Great design and a bargain to boot. Held enough gear for a 3 day weekend, but would have been tight for an overnite hike. Move up to the 50 litre pack for that capability. Pack needed lashpoints on the bottom for a sleep pad/tent and a small pocket on the waist belt would have been nice. Very comfortable and adjusts well. A rain cover w/the pack would have been a nice touch.
