1Decent materials...mostly, very poor design
By Robert Lovell
Leather used appears good, rubber/whatever in sole appears solid and does not squeak like some. However, the fit at the ankle is very tight (fine once it is on) so slipping your foot in is a chore. The effort required to push your foot into the boot requires considerable force on the pull loops. Unfortunately those loops are made of inferior leather (seems much thinner than rest of boot) and the stitching design securing the loop to the shaft of the boot is such that it effectively creates a 'tear strip' out of the loop. What I mean is the thing is so darn difficult to pull on (boot was not too small, plenty of room once my foot was in, almost too loose in fact) that I broke one of the pull loops after less than two months of use! Now they are useless as I can't even get that one on without the added leverage of the pull loop to get past the too tight ankle. Not sure who really makes these but very disappointed in the quality for something carrying the CAT name. Save your money and try something else. :-/

1Shin Eaters! Watch Out! OW! OW! OW! & More OWS!
By xoxo
My husband wears boots 24/7. Honestly, sometimes he is so tired when he comes home from a hard days work he just falls asleep in his chair boots and all. He works for a mining company and can really wear a pair of nice boots out in under 60-90 days. (What with all the rocks & wet sand he tromps in daily). Anyway Santa got these nice looking boots sent overnight for Xmas delivery this year! Boy was hubby happy grinning from ear to ear when he opened them. (For his other pair had just blown not one but 2 flat tires). Anyway, he could not wait to go to work with his new rides so he went in the day after Xmas just to swagger around with the guys. They loved the look! My husbands ego went high. But sadly it was deflated hours later as he was starting to feel a rawness on his shins of all places. I mean come on, most boots either rub your ankles or your fat toes raw if indeed they are going to rub anything the wrong way don't they?Even after trying everything imaginable, like wearing thicker socks etc the rawness got worse day after day and turned into pure weeping sores by day 5. My husband still has tenderness from these boots and is stumped that they would do this. Never has he had a pair of boots eat his shins off the bone, which is what happened!

4Very comfortable
By Mr. Koperniak
I was in need for new boots and didn't want to spend 300 on Redwing boots. So I decided to give Wolverine a try. I have had these boots for 5 months and have to say i'm very pleased. They are half the price and and feel just as good. As of now they look and feel the same as day one. Actually compared to Red Wing boots they have much better laces, which are thicker and with the lace holders going up the boot being plastic it eliminates the laces wearing out. (Red Wing Uses Metal) I work on concrete and blacktop which would typically cause very quick wear on the soles. They are still 95 percent after 5 months. Glad I decided to make the switch. This was a hard choice for me as im on my feet 50+ hours a week in all conditions, but i'm glad I made the switch.

5Been buying these for about 15 yrs
By BigD
I've been buying the Wolverine Durashock Model 01529 in size 12D for around 15 years. They really protect my knees and back. I am on a concrete floor in a sheetmetal shop all day. I always buy a set of Dr.Scholl's worksole insoles to put inside them as well. These boots will last me at least 2 yrs each time I buy a pair. Do the math. $153 divided by 730 days equals about 21 cents per day. Well worth it. They'd no doubt last longer if I'd quit coming home and mowing the grass in them. This is the first time I've ordered them online. I usually buy locally, but the price and free shipping here was unbeatable. As I said, I've been buying these a long time, and knew they'd fit, etc., so ordering without trying them on was no problem for myself. They do pretty well in water when new. I usually spray them with silicone waterproofing spray, not so much for waterproofing, but for protecting the leather. The leather on these boots has always been beautiful leather. That sounds silly for a pair of workboots, I know, but it's true, the leather has always been great quality on these. I was out of the sheetmetal trade for about 8 years, and used these boots for two other jobs.....at an air cargo sorting hub for 1 1/2 yrs and at another job delivering 80lb bags of water softener salt every day. I think if it wasn't for these, I'd be in bad shape right now.

2Consider the 7200
By Johnny V. Shumaker
I bought the 7500 after much research. It's the most expensive unit, but Garmin seemed best, and the 7200 and 7500 have the largest screens. I only rate it two stars not because of technical short-comings, but rather because it's not what I expected. The Pros -* All the maps (US) are included. No need to pay for extra unlocks and deal w/ getting them going.* Truly did work right out of the box.* Works well with XM (I pay $17/month for XM Radio and Nav Traffic service, both of which interface seamlessly w/ the unit) (You also have to purchase a Garmin/XM satellite antenna for this, but once you do, you essentially have a portable XM unit as well as a Nav system. )* Easily plugged into my computer, for loading of mp3s and books.* Interface is probably not the easiest, but that's because there are so many ways to do what you need to do. If, however, you don't want to muck w/ anything, it's ready to go, and you could just go w/ the default interface. The Cons -* Calling customer service is brutal. Once I reached them, they were absolutely knowledgeable and easy to understand. But reaching them meant several failed attempts over several days. If it's not busy, and they're open, you'll be on hold for a long time. After the first few tries I went with their email support. They do respond after 2 days, but after our 3rd back and forth, they told me to call because I had complex questions. I wrote them back, told them calling was difficult, and never heard back. So I did call.* At issue in that call was the fact that the 7200 and the 7500 are identical except for the couple hundred dollar price tag and the dead-reckoning (ability to calculate where you are even if you lose satellite signal). Reading the online descriptions mentioned nothing about installation. Garmin's own site said that it "requires minimal installation". When I got the unit, the owner's manual said that installation of the dead-reckoning cable must be performed by a Garmin-authorized, licensed technician, and basically involves connecting one wire to your car's speed sensor, and another to the cars backup light wire. So my portable GPS unit is slightly less portable, and `minimal installation,' which I agreed w/ customer service is relative, involves getting behind your car's dashboard, and probably a couple hundred dollars more if you choose to go the Garmin-authorized route, as they suggest. The customer support rep told me that was just to cover themselves, but while I'm not entirely thumbs, I'm not comfortable drilling around in the dash of a new car. Incidentally, the Garmin rep (again, knowledgeable and helpful) told me that I should have read the owner's manual BEFORE buying, online. Ironically, I had browsed through it, and attempted several times to call Garmin to ask them about the dead-reckoning before purchasing. In the end, I did what most people do, and just bought.* Because of its excellent screen size, don't expect to just let this sit on a bean-bag on your dash; better be ready to bite the bullet and put the adhesive mount on your dash, or buy one of the smaller units. So the long and short of this is that unless dead-reckoning is an absolute must, and you're willing to do the drilling, go with the cheaper but otherwise identical 7200. Even the owner's manual is the same.A final note, if you're thinking about buying one, try to figure out when their next update is due. They update once per year, usually in the summer. If you purchase within one month before they come out w/ their new release (Aug 2006) you are entitled to a free update. If not, you either run w/ the software shipped, or you pay $75 to upgrade.

5Great for navigating in a van or SUV
By T. Leary
I have been using the garmin 7500 (without the dead-reckoning cable attached, with the XM Radio Antenna) since March 2006 and have loved the unit. The screen is large and very easy to read.I've used the unit mounted on a dash-board and sitting in our cup-holders. In both cases the system found my location with at least 3 or 4 satellites and worked well. While driving through the mountains, in tree covered roads I will often lose the XM signal, and occasionally lose the GPS. I believe the GPS would be improved once I install the dead-reckoning cable.I greatly appreciate the ability to connect directly to my computer and download updates, languages, points of interest, extras, and the ability to change the start-up screen to an image of my choice. It has also helped to have the SD card for storing music and audiobooks while driving. While the navigation system is excellent, the XM interface and MP3 player is only average. The MP3 player has no way to fast-forward or reverse within a track, which is ok for music but hard for audiobooks. The XM service would be better if it stored the last 30 minutes of audio (as most units do today) and it was easier to switch between preset channels (it currently requires about 4 clicks, and you can only store 6 channels per preset). The navigation has been excellent. The maps are up to date and I believe updates will occur when synchronizing with the computer. It is essential to read the manual. Most features come as extra downloads when connecting to the Garmin service, which isn't clear from working with the unit. The large screen makes the 7500 a bad choice for cars and SUV's with small front windows. The screen blocks quite a bit of the window. This isn't the case in our minivan, but would be unusable in vehicles with less window space.Overall this is a great product, and I recommend it to others.

5Navagation system on steroids!!!!
By Vincent Kaniatobe
First off, not for the faint of heart, this is one heck of a GPS unit. Too big for most cars, but one you would love to have. I have a Mistubishi Montero 04 and it fit perfect in the dash, however to veiw movies I had to tilt it making the install look less professional than if I placed it in the center console exciting angle. I love the XM radio which I already had, and the features aren't the best in garmins package, but it functional. Viewing videos are a nice touch, I purchased a vehicle DVD player for it also, but the angle to view is limited in a fixed install. All in all, love it, great deal on Amazon on price, but didn't like the cost of the add on XM antenna, $250.00 bucks more. but my savings on Amazon made the bitter taste easier to swallow.

4Very Comfortable....But Not That Tough.
By Joshua Collins
I drive a delivery truck and unload it for a living. I need to have comfortable boots that are also slip resistant and steel-toe. The Caterpillar Alaska seemed to be the right boots for me.From the first time I put these on they felt great. I didn't need to break them in or anything because they were already so comfortable. Sometimes i'll get home from work and not even take my boots off right away because my feet feel fine.So for comfort i'd give these boots a 100%. Unfortunately when it comes to the durability I can't say the same thing. They look rugged and tough, and maybe I just expected more from a boot that uses the slogan "walking machines".Within 2 or 3 weeks, the yellow rubber on the sole started to wear off. That wasn't a big deal because there's still black rubber underneath, but it makes me wonder why they bothered using it at all. Is it merely for looks? Also for the first few weeks the black from the suede tongue would wear off onto my white socks. A small irritation, but again, not a big deal. After that, the boots did great until about 6 months when i needed to replace the laces because they wore thin on the metal prongs that are used in place of eyelets. Like the other issues, it's just a minor problem because laces are cheap. The real problems started at about 11 months when the rubber soles started to crack and wear out. I was surprised that the bottoms were so thin and hollow. I really expected more rugged durability in these. After all, I usually only wear these boots 4 days a week for about 8-10 hours a day. Once the bottoms wore out, that was the beginning of the end. On rainy days the water would soak through the holes and my socks would get really wet. By the time one year hit, I had to throw them away. It's just a shame that the rubber soles weren't made a little bit thicker because the boot could have lasted a lot longer. The stitching and leather uppers were still in great shape. Did CAT do this to keep the boot from being too heavy, or did they just cut corners to save on production cost? When it was time to replace my boots, I weighed out the pros and cons and tried on a few other brands at the store....but none of them felt as good as the Alaska's! So in my case, comfort beat out durability, and I bought another pair of Alaska's. I know that just like my last pair these will probably only last me about one year, and that really stinks. However, that's one more year of my feet being totally protected and feeling great, and when it comes down to it, that's what's the most important!

4solid workboot
By jethro
I bought these work boots to use on the farm. They have been comfortable and have thus far held up. I would note that the waterproof version still has a regular tongue for ease of getting the boot on but it causes the waterproofing to be effective to the ankle. I found this out when I took these boots out hunting and was walking through the wet grass and soon had wet feet.Update:I have used these boots for a hard season crawling around, in, and on heavy equipment. I have drug them on shop floors, had hot metal and slag fall on them from welding and cutting. Basically I have really abused the shoes. As I mentioned earlier, the shoes really aren't waterproof over the top of the rubber sole. The shoe laces have fallen apart over the last month and the shoes are really, really worn. Overall the shoes have held up well, protected my feet from mishaps, and were really comfortable after getting broken in. The slip resistance has been good on equipment and on concrete floors. I will buy another set of CAT work boots to replace these, just not the waterproof version.

2Not Waterproof!
By KEWROCK
I bought the waterproof version. There's a little metal plaque that says waterproof, but they aren't. Where the tongues attach to the fold-overs for the laces, down at the bottom loop there are very small spaces at all four corners. If you step in more than two and a half inches of water or slush, or working in snow your feet WILL GET WET. It's not a defect, It's just poor design. The other reviewer stated that they are waterproof up to the ankles, THEY ARE NOT. They are only waterproof up to just below the bottom loop, exactly two and a half inches from the ground. I say it's poor design because they did make the tongue out of waterproof sued, and attached it all the way up to the fifth loop, but they just didn't seal those tiny holes at the bottom. Just dumb.Oh, and mine are defective too. The left boot was assembled and stitched together lopsided. strictly cosmetic, but still, they aren't $40 boots from Modell's. They were over $100.The name Caterpillar and it's logo are licensed by a boot company named Wolverine.

5Fun truck
By Nicholas G. Barrows
For those of you who are looking to buy any type of nitro truck, let me tell you you need alot of patience. I own a traxxas nitro similar to this one and it is alot of fun but requires alot of time, patience, and accurate tunning to get it running. These trucks will also put a big dent in your wallet, nitro fuel costs over $30 dollars and you also have to buy glow plugs. Keep in mind this is a fun hobby, I my self am an rc fanatic, but if you are not willing to put in a lot of time and money into the truck, you may want to consider an electric one.

5Great Purchase!
By texasminded
My hubby needed new steel-toed boots for work. The ones he was wearing were hurting his feet. He had purchased a pair of these boots years ago and they wore well and lasted a long time. We weren't sure if they were still made, so of course, I came to Amazon like I always do if I can't find something, and here they were. They are very comfortable on his feet and when these wear out, we will purchase another pair.

5real work boots
By Thoradog
I've worn CATs for a long time along with Thorogood, Corcoran, Bellville, Rocky and Walmart. I have boots for different purposes at work. My one and only pair of Bellvilles lasted 3 months before the sole was worn off. My last pair of Thorogoods leaked but they are still a great brand. My point to all this is Wolverine ( who makes these CAT boots ) is a great company and stands by these boots. If you have a problems, call them! Boots are often hit or miss, as with my $200 Thorogoods. So far my current pair of Alaskas are holding up better than my $300 Alico summits have. The Alaska has thick waterproofed leather, you will have to use snoseal (do not use neats foot or silicon) to reproof the leather every so often or it will leak/wet out after use. I like to keep my boots in top shape so sealing and waxing are part of the deal. They have good stiff ankle support and a lot of comfortable padding at the top. There will be a little breaking in but not much. These are lace to toe with a good sized toe box, plenty of wiggle room and you can cinch down tight on the laces when needed.Ladders, rubber roof, shingle, steel fire escapes, boiler rooms, hard wood floors, I have had a good experience with traction and not tracking much mud. The tread design tends to release well.If you want a submersible boot go buy some Servus rubbers and do it right! The Alaska is not the boot for a homeowner wanting to shovel snow but if you are in an industrial environment these are top notch.Lastly these have a REAL sole, not that dual, soft foam, comfort for the foreman on your jobsite. Yes they are not as cushioning and if you need special cushioning don't buy these. The sole is much tougher then the Vibram Sierra and similiar.I would put it slightly behind the Vibram Montagna in toughness.
