Great performance and beauty
By GSM
First, the construction and cabinet of this sub is spectacular. Monster obviously put a lot of effort into the aesthetics and the cherry cabinet works beautifully with other cherry furniture and components I have. Audio performance is very good with clean low frequency reproduction at fairly high SPLs. I specifically selected this sub as my home theater is in a large room and it's up to the task. The other review which mentioned the power switch location is correct but that's really a non issue. The sub has an automatic signal sense so it goes into standby mode when no signal is present. There's no need to ever fool with the power switch.Note that this sub can work in two ways. First is with a matching LCR component that sits on the top and gets its signal connection through the feet and brass plates on the top of the sub. The alternate method of operation is a straight sub (which is how I use it). I point this out because as a sub only, you'll end up with four brass plugs visible on the top of the cabinet. Monster does also sell a straight sub in this product family in a low, rectangular case, but I prefer the tall and slender cabinet of the THX SL200.Operation is straightforward. I have a THX Pioneer amp so a simple RCA connector is all that's required to feed the sub. The only nit I have with operation is that although the sub's mode selector switch indicates 'THX mode', the level control is still operational when normally that would be bypassed. Not a big deal but took me a momemt to figure out what was going on.I suspect the real reason these have been appearing at a large discount is the same reason I recently picked up some other high end components inexpensively; in this economy few can afford the high price tags and manufacturers are discontinuing these lines. I'm not sure if that's the case with Monster but it wouldn't matter to me anyway. This is a great component.

Incredible
By .
I just acquired TWO of these subs on ebay for a tiny fraction of what they're going for here, and I'll have to say that in the nine plus years I've been on ebay, it's the best deal I've ever gotten. It still wasn't cheap, but I couldn't be happier. First of all this Monster subs finish is spectacular. The piano gloss cherry finish is exquisite, and the curved cabinet design to reduce standing waves inside is outstanding. The sub is rear firing, however you could turn it around and point it forward if you so desired. There is a cover for the rear as well as the front, which is just for looks. There's nothing behind it. I have my two subs rear firing. My Onkyo TX-NR808 has two subwoofer outputs that I have ran to the subs via Monster Cables, and I have the subs set on "THX" with the cross over set at it's highest setting, as with the volume also. I use the receivers controls then to set the subs levels. I watched Avatar as the first movie to listen to them, and Avatar has a high definition sound track. I was blown away by the subs. They are tight, accurate, and don't seem to have a loud spot at any certain frequency. I love them. Not only are they incredibly beautiful, but they blow away the Infinity SW-12 that they replaced, that now in comparison, the Infinity sounded boomy. I'd recommend this subwoofer to anyone. Monster did an excellent job putting this one together.

Very nice looking, great deal on closeout product BUT not as great as other reviews state.

I bought two of these from university Audio. They are available on that popular auction site for $349.00 with free shipping. These have been out of production for YEARS. University audio is selling off remaining stock of Monster speaker products in fact if you look at the Monster website it no longer shows any trace of them making high end speakers.Monster cable is one of those brands that brings out a stark contrast in opinion. Just like our current battles between the Republican party vs. The democrats each with their own views of what should be done to get us onto the right path Monster is a name that either brings up very positive or VERY negative opinions. Those who see Monster as a manufacturer of highly overpriced interconnects feel that a high quality cable is not "necessary" to maintain high quality sound. They maintain that Monster's claims of using better quality components in their cables will help transfer the cleanest signal possible is nothing short of a lie. Then there are those who believe that if you have gone out and spent considerable sums of money (8k or more) on their Audio Video system then an investment into high quality interconnects just makes sense. (I find it funny when people review products such as banana plugs yet flat out say they use 14 or 16 gauge wire, I use 10AWG wire)I purchased my first Monster cables almost 20 years ago. I currently use (almost entirely) Monster cable products to wire my systems. Many of the cables I use have been kept even though my system has changed MANY times. For instance I originally had a Laserdisc player, then a S-VHS recorder then came DVD, Bluray and now I only store my media digitally on a Windows Home server that nicely sits out of the way in the basement (store all my blurays on that server). So years ago Monster decided to come out with these super in-line array speaker setups. And yes they used very high quality components. Real wood veneers extremely stiff cabinetry and some of the best drivers available. Unfortunately Monster faced an extremely prejudiced headwind and in all honesty failed to market these properly. To begin I think they went a bit too high end My front speakers (polk) were around $1500 each. Monsters were running around $3000 each. a HUGE jump. Then you look at what was happening in the economy as the stock market started to plunge well the high end consumer pretty much vanished almost instantaneously. So now lets look at this component.Nice cabinet In fact the only reason I bought this was because I wanted a subwoofer that looked good next to my Polk LSI's.I have 2 of them stacked one on top of each other. I have the top one actually sitting upside down with a piece of rubber 3mm underpayment cut to the shape of the cabinet to isolate them. What this does is give you a very nice aesthetic look to it since the grills line up.Performance wise they are ok. I have had MANY subwoofers. the ones these replaced were velodyne with 10" drivers (also had 2)The velodynes kicked these things butt. Left, right, up and down. There was NO CONTEST. The Velodyne sounded tighter, punchier. Just an overall better quality sound However they were uglier than sin! Big black boxes with ugly black vinyl laminate on them. (i just sold one on Craigslist and am regretting it now) The other one is being used in our kids loft system. The sound on these is not bad it just seems boomy to me secondly at high output such as on Avatar they max out. Something that NEVER happened with the smaller drivers on the Velodyne unit.So whats the deal?$349.00 with free shipping? Yeah is still a great deal. I was looking at spending $1800 for a pair of subs so finding these for $700 was nice. When you compare them to ANY sub at $350 they are a great value. Were they fail is when you compare them to a $900 subwoofer.About my rating system.3 stars = Meets expectations4 or 5 stars = exceeds expectations.I added pictures of what they look like stacked on top of each other
