5Bilsteins got nothing on KYB!
By BennyBoy
Ok, it started a few years back. I bought a Fj62 Land Cruiser and with in a few days got a set of Rancho 9000x shocks. At first I was happy, but then I took a ride in a friends Fj55 , and this thing handled the freeway better than my 62! I was like wtf is going on here? I asked him what sort of shocks was he running, he replyed KYB MonoMax. So later that weekend I did a little reading on shocks. I found that there where a ton of people that were not happy with there Ranchos, after they tried some Bilsteins. So rather than go with what I felt were good shocks and buy some KYB's I drank the Bilstein coolade and bought some bilsteins. The ride was better and I was real pleased. But a month or so later I went wheeling in my friends FJ55 again, Oops! Now I'm back to the feeling that I bought the wrong shocks again! So I drove his rig for about two hours and than I really felt foolish! Mainly because I knew the KYB's were good but I bought in to the Bilstein hype, like the, they must be better, there made in Germany, right? Anyway I managed to convince the shop that I was very unhappy and wanted to return them and get the MonoMax in there place. In the end, it cost me more, but I now have these very good shocks in my ride. They are many time better than Ranchos, and also better than Bilstein(IMO).They may be better because of the Leaf sprung 62? but I just know the rig rides better then it ever has before. Everything in the road is felt, while large holes are sucked up. The KYB MM shocks just feel faster, as in they respond very nicely to unexpected road conditions. Makes for a very controlled and stable drive. The Bilstein also worked well, but did not handle large holes at all, casing great shock to the ride. The Ranchos were pretty much bad at most everything. They had a range of 9 positions but I could only get them to either be soft and out of control of so hard, it made for a white knuckle ride! Imo, the Ranchos are an extremely poor design, and there very over priced for what you get.
