5Best toy purchase of the year!
By Ivy
My 20-month old started showing interest in letters - often pointing at them for us to sound them out. So I bought him this puzzle and, what do you know, he already knows all the letters of the alphabet! It took him just a few days to identify the shapes of the letters and complete the puzzle independently. Then he spent a few weeks bringing us letters and trying to sound them out on his own. There is nothing cuter than a now 21-month old going "ffff" or "hhhh" in a silent fashion as in "horse". What impressed me the most is that he did all this with very little help from us (other than sounding out the letters on demand). This toy is the perfect introduction to letters for these reasons:1. having the letters arranged as a puzzle helps the child identify the shapes (typically toddlers own a few simple puzzles and so this toy provides a nice bridge to the next level).2. the tactile experience from tracing the empty letter spots and the letters themselves make learning more effective.3. the fun primary colors add visual interest. To extend the use of this toy, we sometimes sort the letters by color.4. The fact that these letters are lowercase is important because most writing in books etc. is in lowercase. In fact, Montessorians suggest introducing children only to lowercase letters, and showing them the uppercase letters after they have learned to read. I disagree with this point, because my boy is interested in uppercase letters as well, and has learned quite a few of them by simply asking us when he sees them in books, newspapers, etc.5. The genius of this toy is that it is so much fun for the child - in fact our boy plays with this more than any entertainment-only toy.Note the dimensions - it is quite large and heavy. The quality is excellent too. I recommend it to all parents. It is money well spent (granted, a lot of money, but well spent nonetheless). I bought mine directly from Tag Toys and the shipping + tax was a little cheaper than if I were to buy it from Amazon (very strange, since the price of the product is the same in both sites).
