4Nice little bookshelf system
By Buxstead
This little system has clean lines and very good sound for its size and cost. The speakers are well balanced and have a warm and comfortable midrange that makes the system easy on the ears. I use the system with a computer and a Dell 2405 FPW monitor. The composite video output is very sharp and together the two make for a nice desktop entertainment system. The price is right and the build quality is high. Audiophiles might find the power lacking, but for a desktop entertainment system the Philips MCD708 is a good choice.

4Decent System for the price and speaker size
By P. Pimental
I have had the MCD702 for about three weeks now and played a number of CD's various genres including classical such as Beethoven's 5th and 6th(Karajan, 1982, as well as various rock CD's from Yes, U2, Neil Young (grunge and ballads), the Cure and other artists. I also sampled some Celtic music. I noticed that the speakers sound tinny and muffled when none of the DSP/Loudness/DBB settings were employed at either low or middle volume levels in my office, a 1950's era 12x10 bedroom. However, I noticed a significant improvement when any of the DSP/Loudness/DBB settings were employed even at the lowest levels and can play most cd's at the 3 or 4 level at acceptable sound levels and with decent/ perhaps even good sound quality. I found the video acceptable through my TV Tuner card to my 17 inch CRT. I did notice a delay between the sound and the video, but I suspect it is TVTuner card related and expect this to be resolved when I hook the system direct to a flat screen monitor/TV.I did not observe any problems playing older cd's with some scratches as well as any problems playing CD-R's.I did notice that not all of the buttons on the remote work on that receiver such as the "Surround" and the "Vol.Sel". These seem to be features supported on other Philips models and the manual does not refer to them. The manual does imply that not all buttons on the remote worked on every unit. I infer from this that that remote is designed for use with a number of disparate systems. I did notice that sometimes that I had to specifically select the mode (tuner, disc, etc) before I was able to enter the command on the remote I wanted. The FM tuner seemed to be average, and comparable to my older componet receivers and tuners.I am a little disappointed in that the product literature states that the amplifier is rated at 50 total watts, yet the manual stated the receiver is rated at 22 watts RMS per channel. I do realize that is not a significant difference musically and sonic wise, but I do not appreciate the discrepancy.Overall, it seems to be a very flexible sytem offering a decent value at about $200. I would probably buy the system again.

4Should be better - for $200
By Gadget Guy
I was looking for a small unobtrusive shelf system to use in my study. The unit had to have at least one set of aux imputs, and it had to have small footprint; no more than 12" deep. While the Philips fit the bill, (it has 2 sets aux imputs) I didn't care for the "open face" of the speakers. The DVD capability was an extra that I doubt I'll ever use.The sound from the enclosed speakers is fine, expecailly at soft listneing levels. I replaced their speakers with a pair of TEAC speakers from another set. They have black grill cloths and sound as good if not better. The other negative, albiet a small one, is the clock which is only programed in 24 hour format. So 3PM is 1500 hours on the their clock! Great if you live outside the US, but a rather dumb move for our market. As to price, the usual price is around $200. I wouldn't spend that much for the unit unless you really want the DVD capability in a very small unit. But remember, you won't get surround sound (5 speaker capbility) with this set. Simply 2 channel audio no matter what the source material is. I paid $160 at a national electronics store. At that price it is worth the money.
