5Years Ahead of its Time
By Griffin Hayes-Pontius
To start; I collect Primes. I admit it's a recent hobby and most of them are leader/voyager class variants from the movie. Still, I've gotten ahold of some of the other Prime incarnations released in the past eight years. The G2 laser version was something I'd never managed to find (much less buy) when I was a kid and was therefore fairly high on my "hit" list. When I got it, I was more than slightly surprised at how detailed it was for something released at the time. Checking poseability, this thing's got all the joints that the 2006 Classics Optimus Prime has.The vehicle mode is primarily black with a red wash going up over the front of the hood -a design feature that seems to have been echoed in the 2007 movie design- and the hood halves seem to have trouble closing. Still, it's nothing to return/write anyone about. The trailer is larger and more detailed than expected. With the decals on, I find it amusing how the side of the trailer depicts the hero of millions incinerating what seems to be a forest. The other noteworthy feature of the trailer is a disc launcher on top. The launcher itself is simple in design and requires no batteries or air pumps to operate. The range it fires isn't anything to write home about, but it's still fairly impressive.Transformation is disappointingly simple. The feet fold down, the lower legs extend from covering the thighs, the hood splits in half and folds out to form a rather beefy set of shoulder pads above the arms that simply lie straight alongside the cab. The cab itself forms a rather bulky backpack where the batteries are stored, and the head folds out from a compartment inside the stomach. The robot mode is decent and as mentioned surprisingly poseable, however no skill is required to transform this thing. The trailer's simple. Lie it with its back end on the ground and open up the cap on the front. The entire thing pretty much springs open. This -in my opinion- is one of the set's real highlights. This trailer packs a disc launcher, a five-missile rack that can fire all five missiles in rapid succession, and an air-pump rocket launcher. For one set, it's a lot of features and I would've gone absolutely nuts over this thing's arsenal when I was younger. The only downside however, is that the rockets take some effort to really fire.To sum it up, this toy was years ahead of its time and it is a must-have for transformers collectors.
