5The only hearth guard you should consider.
By Leeese
I bought the Kids Edge Hearth Pad WITH Metal Frame (Taupe Color) and installed it on a hearth 77" wide and 20" deep. Installation took 30 minutes, tops, going at a leisurely pace, and was easy for even someone not considered very handy. There is only one section of padding that you have to cut yourself (the majority of the padding is already permanently attached to the metal frame.) The piece you cut goes directly on the front, so be very careful cutting the padding, or you will be able to see the mess at the seams. Also, be sure to read the directions -- if you simply measure and cut, you'll be disappointed; you need to add 3/8" (or even 1/2" to be safe) to the measured length before cutting. The covers for the SIDES of the hearth are separate attachments. They do come with their own metal frame pieces, which slide into the ends of the main metal frame to extend it, then you attach the padding. No cutting of the pad is needed for the sides IF your hearth depth is at least 18". Any less and you will have to cut them to fit. There is peel-off adhesive already in place on the inside of the padding, so there's no messy glue to deal with. These side pieces attach into the main unit quite sturdily, I was skeptical before installation, but impressed afterward. I highly recommend reading ahead in the instructions about the installation of the sides, so you don't get the unit completely installed BEFORE you realize you need to remove it entirely to do the sides. That was a small frustration when I installed mine, but not a huge setback. Also, be careful when removing the backing from the adhesive, on one section of mine, the adhesive came off with the backing -- remove ONLY the white part, the clear part that looks like double-sided tape IS the adhesive. This is truly the only hearth pad I would consider buying or ever recommend. The adhesive type pads come right off with the slightest tug and are useless, in my opinion. The metal frame makes all the difference. It is STURDY and is simply ingenious design -- two adults pulling on it didn't budge it in the slightest. Any baby or toddler could grab hold and use it to pull himself up with no problems at all (as my baby does frequently). I HIGHLY recommend this product. See my images in the product image gallery to see the unit installed and in use. What a breath of fresh air to buy something that actually delivers and does what it is supposed to do (and does it well.)

5THE BEST HEARTH GUARD
By M. Davie
I have been canvasing the internet for some type of guard to cover the hearth in our family room. I have read countless reviews of the "double faced tape foam pads" that come off right away with little effort. This product attached exactly as described. I had the unit installed as well as the pads measured, cut and installed in 10 minutes. The taupe color is very discrete on our cream, red & black brick fireplace. I can't see how my three little ones would ever get this off even if they tried. Great product and gives me the feeling of comfort that if someone falls and hits there head that the chance of sticthes has been greatly reduced. An absolute must for your hearth.

3Did Not Meet Expectations
By Hiker36
I ordered and installed this product for a stone hearth in my family room. After owning it for a month now, I think that this product is probably the best of a bad bunch. I needed to keep my toddlers from getting hurt but I didn't want the foam bumpers that glue to the stone of the fireplace. This product is better than those, because it uses a metal bracket system to stay in place, so no glue on the hearth itself.Unfortunately, it has some annoying negatives. First, mine was not entirely finished. The installation instructions indicate that once you have the foam guards cut to length and ready to install, you simply peel off the adhesive backing and stick them onto the metal brackets. Mine came with no adhesive at all. None on the metal, none on the foam strips. I had to purchase contact cement to make it work. Contact Cement worked perfectly by the way, for anyone who has a similar problem. My second annoying issue is that the brackets do not stay tight. They are held in place by tightening a screw at one end of the unit, which pulls the two corners of the unit toward each other and keeps it in place. Over time, without ANY jostling or bumping from us or our kids, the screw loosens and requires retightening. I've tightened it about once per week since I installed it. Very annoying.Aside from these issues, the guard has a nice appearance and the foam pieces are excellent at keeping little heads safe. The foam itself is also fairly easy to clean, since the exposed surfaces are not very porous. For us, this product was our best option by comparison, but we are disappointed that it requires regular maintenance.
