5Installing MLP on Mercury/Ford transmission
By Donald A. Smeathers
Easy to follow instructions.Great savings over dealer purchased identical part.Would recommend to anyone with basic mechanical abilities and access to ramps and 1/4" socket set. For raising vehicle, don't use a jack, use ramps and flashlight if necessary to locate the two bolts that secure part on transmission case. If vehicle doesn't start after installing part, simply loosen the two bolts and rotate part slightly until vehicle starts, then secure bolts firmly without over tightening.

5Manual Lever Position Sensor or Transmission Range Sensors
By Sixsausage
My 1994 Mercury Cougar XR7 didn't want to start, at times. It got to a point when it would happen many times per day. I would leave the car alone for a few minutes, then it would start. I took the car to the mechanic, but didn't find anything wrong. We were all focused on the "electrical", such as ignition switch, coil pads, plug cables, battery and starter. All those functioned well and they couldn't find what was wrong. And of course, the car started every time they tried to start it.But the problem of not starting continued until I found some comments left online by other drivers who had similar experiences. To solve the immediate problem of starting, I left my key in the run position and then moved the stick shift through all the gears. I would then put it in neutral or park, and the car would start. Because the neutral safety switch was faulty, the car "thought" that the transmission was in gear, and the switch prevented the car to be started, even if it was actually in park or neutral; the only two gear selections the car can be started. By moving the stick shift up and down, it would eventually let the neutral safety switch know that the car was now in park or neutral, and therefore could be started. Other people had problems with the transmission doing hard shifts, or simply going into neutral at higher speeds. So, I went ahead and ordered the Motorcraft SW59776 safety switch. Not to split hairs, but this is not only the switch, it is the kit, and Amazon should advertise it as such. Also, the neutral safety switch is now more commonly referred to as a Manual Lever Position Sensor. And no, it has nothing to do with a Manual Transmission. My car is an automatic.Since the price is great, I recommend purchasing this kit, instead of just the switch, which you can get from your auto parts store. In the kit I received, 3 of the spacers were missing. That being said, my mechanic installed the new neutral safety switch in 30 minutes, and the car now starts up every time.Despite the missing spacers, I give this transaction a 5 out of 5. You or your mechanic can use the old spacers, if needed. The price was great. The kit arrived 1 day earlier than posted, and it was exactly what the car "wanted". If you are having transmission or starting problems, you may want to check into the possibility that your Neutral Safety Switch is failing. If it's the case, it will save you a whole lot of money over having the transmission replaced. Some folks have done that and it never solved their problem. It was the Neutral Safety Switch all along. The Ford part number for this kit, which fits my car, and many others, is F5AZ-7A247-AA. Hope this review helps. Thank you.
